Seattle Seahawk History

Seattle Seahawks are an American Professional football team that was organized in the year 1976.The team is based in Seattle, Washington USA. The football team was formed on 15th of June 1972.At the time, it went by the name Seattle Football Professional Inc. On June 4th, 1974 the group was awarded an expansion franchise by the NFL.


The official announcement and signing of the agreement was done on December 5th, 1974 by Peter Rozelle the NFL Commissioner at the time and was signed by Lloyd W Nordstrom of the Nordstrom family which were the majority partners of the consortium.


After a public naming contest of more than 20,000 entries and 1700 names on June 7th, 1975, the name Seattle Seahawks was selected which was a suggestion from Cark Mcmillan. The general manager of the team was John Thompson a former executive of the University Of Washington Jack Petra who was the assistant coach of the Minnesota Vikings was hired as the first coach of the team.

Through the expansion draft held with Seattle and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while alternating picks for 39 rounds on March 30th and 31st in 1976, the first team members were selected from 26 teams of unprotected players in the league. The team then participated in the field for the first time on August 1st, 1976 in a pre-season game against Francisco 49ers which they played in the brand new Kingdome


Up to date seahawks are the only NFL team to have switched conferences in the post-merger area. The team started to play in NFC West Division in 1976 but after one season it switched conferences with Buccaneers thus joining the AFC West Division.An alignment dictated by the league as part of the 1976 expansion plan so that these two teams could play each other twice and other NFL Franchise.


Seattle has won 9 division titles in their Franchise history, 2 AFC West titles and 7NFC West titles. They have won the NFC champion game thrice and lost the AFC champion game once in 1983.They have one Super Bowl victory in 2014 and 2 loses in 2006 and 2015.They have an all-time playoff record of 12-12.
